When I need a hearing aid, I’m going with diamond-encrusting, too. Because screw my ear canal!

As a classically trained musician, I generally rail against the horrible renditions of the SSB at sports events. When the military chorus was singing, I commented that I’d rather hear them do the Anthem. That said, I think Gaga crushed it.

I was impressed that she could tone down the outrageousness that much.

I’m not gonna lie, I thought she looked hot and I really enjoyed her rendition of the national anthem. She did a great job.

It was horrible hearing it butchered at high school pep rallies. Ugh, it’s not yours to play with, damnit, it’s our countries national anthem. SING IT RIGHT.

Yeah I usually cringe at that. My douche band director made a grave error in the SSB, everyone piano dynamic but the clarinets. Fortunately, we had common sense and ignored it and the clarinet is no louder than a cricket.

I agree, to a point. For many years, I have complained about lugubrious renditions of the Banner. On many occasions, I have remarked, “It’s the Star Spangled Banner, not the Star Spangled Ballad!” And I still feel that way, though I think Gaga’s rendition, while it had just a couple instances of unnecessary R&B improv, was a good mix of traditional with the sort of glitz the moment called for. The harmonies were mostly standard, it wasn’t too slow, it didn’t sound like a torch song.

I have often advocated for there being one official way to sing our national song. But the song we sing today, particularly with its harmony, wasn’t firmly established as the National Anthem until 1931, though it had been used unofficially since the late 1800s. And even then, there are various harmonizations, famously by Sousa and Damrosch. And, this being America, I think a little liberty with the song is okay, as long as it’s still recognizable. And many singers fail that test.

Personally, I’d like to see us use a different song. After all, the Anthem is about a flag in an obscure battle of a largely forgotten war. I’d rather we have a song like America , which actually sings about the beauties of the land and its history. Besides, the Star Spangled Banner is ridiculously hard to sing.

Conductors can tell you whatever they want in rehearsal, but at the show, all bets are off.

She’s spent the last few years working with Tony Bennett. I think she’s learned a lot from him, particularly how to sing. She’s always had talent, but I think Bennett has really helped her refine it, and maybe she’s learned a bit about professionalism along the way, because Bennett is a class act. She’s got some very respectable jazz recordings out now, too.

I thought she did a good job. I’m mostly just glad she didn’t turn it into one of those “look at me. I can hold a note for 30 minutes and I’m gonna do it at the end of every line.”

Exactly. I thought she struck an excellent balance of brining her style to it without making it an ego trip.

Seriously. Best since Whitney. Arguably even better.

I would go with better, since I never cared for Whitney’s version. She was the first to sing the song in 4/4 because you can’t have a pop backbeat in 3/4. That should be a 15-yard penalty for a flagrant foul.
